ASUS EeeKeyboard Review

ASUS EeeKeyboard

Since the miniITX boards came out the fans of game platform emulators like MAME and multimedia centers like MythTV have come up with hundreds of designs for a small multimedia computer with living room appeal. It was all very exciting, but I was always wondering why no company would create such e device and sell it for a reasonable price.
Finally, here is the eeeKeyboard and it is perfect. I love the design, the performance is just good enough and the best thing is the wireless HDMI interface.
I know that it does not have a lot of power when compared to the multi-core >2GHz CPUs that you get in laptops at a similar price today, but this was never the idea. I can connect this keyboard-sized-living-room-friendly computer to my home TV and surf the Internet from the sofa. I can run MAME and play a game and I can also watch video. Of course it is not 1080p and Quicktime runs slow, but my sofa is too far from the TV to notice "low quality" when I play a "low-resolution" movie (and most of the movies I have are "low" resolution).
I love this computer because I have been wanting something like this since the first 533MHz miniITX board (yes, you can play videos even on this type of system).

Imation Wireless Projector Link (Black) Review

Imation Wireless Projector Link (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Summary: quality of image is very good, and set-up at presentation-time is easy (*initial* set-up was not, see below). But the connection can be fussy: sometimes, for no apparent reason the connection is dropped (even with only 2 metres between computer and receiver. Occasionally parts of the screen will not update properly. All in all satisfactory, but not great.
Detail: I teach at a university, and use a tablet pc hooked to a digital projector in place of a whiteboard/chalkboard. I bought this product to free me up from cables etc. Thus my needs are not for full-motion video etc, but I do need something *very* reliable (there's nothing worse than making an audience wait while you fuss with technical problems in the middle of presentation). This product is fairly good; good enough not to return, but it could be much better.
My computer's resources exceeds Imation's advertised requirements (Motion M1400 1.1 GHZ, 2 gb ram, all drivers up-to-date)
Initial set-up. The documentation suggests using the Imation software that loads directly from the USB dongle when plugged into your laptop. My heart sank when I first tried that: the image was very jerky and slow-to-update (and the image changes only as a pen writes on the screen on my tablet; I don't even want to *think* what video would be like). The documentation also suggests as another option using some third-party software by "DisplayLink" which is supplied: once that gets going it is *much* better. Getting that going was difficult though: a succession of install attempts led me through lots of freeze-ups/blue-screens etc. I reinstalled drivers and after a few hours got it to work. Not a very friendly user experience.
Use: class-room set-up is easy: just plug in the receiver to the projector and the dongle to the computer. The two find each other without trouble, and after 20 seconds or so, you have your image. It's been said that wireless USB is fussy though, and they're right: sometimes (maybe once out of every three presentations) the connection will be dropped, for no apparent reason. The reciever/transmitter can be within 2 metres each motionless, yet down goes the connection. Fortunately the software re-links automatically, so one has time to smile apologetically, roll your eyes, and 30 seconds or so later, things are back up. I'm not happy with that, but I can tolerate it. Occasionally there are some weird screen artifacts: portions of the image won't update properly.
So minus a point for difficult set-up, and minus a point for frequently dropping connections.

Cables To Go 29572 TruLink Wireless USB to VGA Adapter Kit (Black) Review

Cables To Go 29572 TruLink Wireless USB to VGA Adapter Kit (Black)

The good?
This device works excellent in our office for presentations that require no video. Powerpoints, PDFs, and other presentations work as expected from this device. It is simple to use. Simply install the program off the provided disc, plug in the device, and connect. You are good to go.
The bad?
You cannot display video. Seems to be a bandwidth issue. This is holding me back from ordering more of these devices. It would be amazing not to have to deal with VGA cables when none are ran in the walls for our projectors. It also is a bit expensive for what it does.

Atlona AT-HDAIR PC to Computer Monitor/HDTV Wireless Adapter Review

Atlona AT-HDAIR PC to Computer Monitor/HDTV Wireless Adapter
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is the second time I bought this wireless TV adapter. This Atlona one was only $129.95 from Electronics-depot. It is the same gadget as one called Warpia except the plastic case is white. It worked great streaming laptop to TV downstairs so I bought it for my second TV upstairs. The video can be choppy if used with Atom based netbook, but it works flawlessly with the core 2 duo based HP notebook. It uses the processor horsepower for the video driver so the comp. must be strong enough to handle it. As long as it is used with the strong computer the video and audio will stream nicely to the TV. Even high def movies.

IOGear Wireless USB Audio and Video Kit with Audio, VGA and Wireless USB Adapters GUWAVKIT (Grey) Review

IOGear Wireless USB Audio and Video Kit with Audio, VGA and Wireless USB Adapters GUWAVKIT (Grey)
Average Reviews:

I just moved from a house to an apartment and decided there should be a way to cancel cable and just watch Hulu on my 50" plasma for free. I researched online and found this product to have the highest customer rating, so I bought it. I spent an enlightening hour on the phone with their tech support, and here's some things you should know. My apartment is 740sq ft. My computer is located just around a corner and exactly 24 feet from my TV.
1st: the product WILL NOT WORK with Windows 7. They're working on the issue. Yeah, great.
2nd: when they say 30 foot max distance, they mean it and even that is stretching the truth.
3rd: when they don't say anything about REQUIRING a direct line of sight, they are omitting facts. I had to hold the USB piece in mid air with a direct line of sight to the TV and it still only had 2 orange bars (should have 5 green).
4th: other wireless devices WILL interfere with reception, even at different frequencies. The tech told me this. My wireless router was blamed for the choppy video coming across to the TV.
I even hooked it up to my netbook and placed it 12 feet from the TV-- video was still choppy. Bottom line, if you're looking to watch video from the internet on your TV wirelessly, you are ahead of your time. Maybe in a few years someone will figure it out. Iogear is not that someone. I returned for a refund, and Amazon was, as always, absolutely wonderful.

IOGEAR Wireless HD Computer to TV Kit GUWAVKIT2 (Gray) Review

IOGEAR Wireless HD Computer to TV Kit GUWAVKIT2 (Gray)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Bought this to act as a second monitor between my Mac and my TV in another room.
Firstly, I had to download the Mac drivers online as they were not available on the CD that came with. However, after finding the drivers on the support page, everything installed easily.
Secondly, it seemed to work fine through exactly 1 wall; the manual says it needs line-of-sight, but if it's just one wall you might be fine. The transmitters heat up quite a bit, probably due to the frequency they run on, but other than that the transmitters were easy to hide and did not create eyesores.
Finally, it worked well with general tasks and browsing the internet, including playing videos through vlc. However, it would not play videos in full-screen at all and what's worse, the drivers made it impossible to play flash video/animations online at all, regardless if I was even using the second display. This led me to attempt to uninstall the software and drivers, however there is no uninstall process for the drivers, just the software and thus you will be stuck with a 'Wireless Dongle' icon in your task-bar for the rest of eternity.
I'm sure this works fine with a Windows machine, but it only succeeded in under-performing and breaking my Mac's ability to play flash. I'll wait until a software-agnostic media transmitter comes along.
