Pioneer Airware MyFi XM Portable Satellite Radio Review

Pioneer Airware MyFi XM Portable Satellite Radio
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I don't normally submit "product opinions" (I know, shame on me) but this portable XM radio from Pioneer is so good that I felt that I had to. I had been considering getting some kind of a satellite radio for my car for more than 6 months and when I found out that a friend of mine had a Delphi XM unit in his car I knew that the time had come to finally make a move :-)
I was thinking of getting a Delphi MyFi but then discovered that the Pioneer AirWare had recently hit the store shelves. I like the Pioneer brand and also liked the looks (and controls) of the Pioneer unit more than those of the MyFi .. so I picked up an AirWare at the local Circuit City (can get it cheaper elsewhere for sure). I have had it for 3 weeks now and during this time have used it EXTENSIVELY in the car, in my home office and also on business trips. It works great !
I am especially impressed by the effectiveness of the built-in FM transmitter ... I have used a few built-in and external FM transmitters in my time over the past few years but haven't had much luck with them (too much interference from other radio stations). I was pleasantly surprised (and relieved) to discover that the AirWare's transmitter is VERY effective ... I have been driving around the Connecticut/ Westchester County/NYC/Long Island region quite a bit since I got it, without having to switch FM frequencies at all !
The features and sound quality of the unit are great. It is very useful that you can record up to 5 hours of audio (via a "scheduled record" function) that you can then listen to offline when the satellite reception is not up to snuff. Another neat feature is that if you hear a song or artist that you like, you can press a button and from then on whenever that same song or artist is playing on any of the 150+ channels the unit beeps and displays a message so that, if you want, you can press the same button and the unit automatically switches to the relevant channel.
The AirWare comes with everything that you neeed to set it up at home or in a car. When using the AirWare in my car I use the "vent mount" to secure it (in its cradle) to an air vent. I have the antenna magnetically-mounted outside on the front part of the car roof. On some of the more tree-lined roads of Connecticut, satellite reception can sometimes be spotty ... you need to have line-of-sight to the XM satellites which are positioned in the southern sky .. but generally reception is very good. All-in-all I am very happy that I got it ... it is a very, very well designed and executed product ... plus the breadth and quality of the XM programming is great.
In summary I can heartily recommend both the Pioneer AirWare and the XM service !

SIRIUS Starmate ST1 Plug-and-Play Satellite Radio Receiver Review

SIRIUS Starmate ST1 Plug-and-Play Satellite Radio Receiver
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm not sure if the problems that I have with this system are unique to it or are shared amongst all satellite radios. Let me begin by saying that it works wonderfully in the car.
I had to install the antenna on the roof of my BMW which was surprisingly easier than expected. I was hoping that I could just toss it on the dash so that I could move the radio between cars, but that made for a very choppy signal.
I also got the home kit, but the signal is EXTREMELY choppy in doors. Maybe I don't have my antenna well positioned, but I don't have many options.
The indoor antenna is very limiting, because it's only about 15 feet long, which means that you've got to position the receiver pretty close to a window (yes, the antenna needs to be facing outside - and needs to be pointed N, S, E, or W depending on where you are in the country.
My recommendation is that his is a good car receiver, but if you're looking for more than that - consider other options.

XACT COMMUNICATIONS XTR3CK Sirius Satellite Plug + Play Receiver and Vehicle Kit Review

XACT COMMUNICATIONS XTR3CK Sirius Satellite Plug + Play Receiver and Vehicle Kit
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought mine 1/8/06 (Bestbuy, $29.95 on sale) and also bought the home kit at the same time ($49.95). Got home, went to the Sirius website, signed up for service and had the sweet sounds of their programming in my home all within 30 minutes.
I opted to utilize the built-in FM transmitter to link to my home theater receiver, and was satisfied with the sound quality. I got lucky with my antenna placement because the window closest to my stereo faces North-West, exactly where it needs to be for reception at my Florida location.
Running the antenna in my car was a bit of a pain, but it was worth the hour I spent installing it. Again, I use the FM link to listen in my car.
As for user features, I must confess to being one of those lazy people that learns a few favorite channels, then uses the remote to directly access them. Over time I may actually read the manual and program the pre-sets.
Overall, I'm very satisfied. The unit fits in my shirt pocket, and I use it every day. I don't understand some of the complaints from the other owners. All I know is that I wanted a cheap unit to listen to Howard in my car & home, and the XTR3CK with the XS052 home kit got it done for $80.00. The bonus of all the rest of the great Sirius music & programming lets me easily justify the monthly subscription.

Delphi MyFi XM2GO Portable XM Satellite Radio Receiver Complete Package W/ Kits and More Review

Delphi MyFi XM2GO Portable XM Satellite Radio Receiver Complete Package W/ Kits and More
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After much thought I finally decided to venture into the Satellite Radio world. I decided on XM and then started going through the process of selecting a receiver. I ultimately decided on the XM2GO based on its ability to record music up to five hours and its alleged on the go capability.
For starters the package comes loaded with everything you need. I did my registration and activation online. The on-line activation and registration is wonderful! I had the unit set up in my home stereo system and playing the complete channel line-up in less than a half hour.
Using the home antenna through my home entertainment system is great. The dock that the XM sits in takes up little space and fits on top of my other components. The sound is excellent in my house. While I have read about problems with antennas and interferance, I experience none of that. I moved my antenna to where I thought it was least noticeable on the top of my entertainment center, checked my reception on my XM2GO and I had all kinds of reception bars.
The On the Go idea seems fantastic. While I haven't tried it in a lot of places yet, (just walking around my yard and so on) the reception is in and out and basically worthless. This seems to be the common complaint amongst reviewers so let me add my name in the mix of folks who are not happy with the so called portable feature. The recording feature really makes up for that though so it all evens out. The only recording drawback is that you cannot delete specific songs. If you want to delete recorded material, you have to delete everything. So yes you can be totally portable without any antennas for working out, riding the subway, and so on but you will really need to have recorded your music ahead of time. If you're thinking you are going to turn this unit on and listen to live radio without the antenna, think again.
Setting up the unit in my car took a little work but again, less than thirty minutes and I was dialed in a ready to go. Because my new car does not have a tape deck I opted for the antenna approach using an empty FM single. I have read so many reviews on a multitude of sites about people going through all kinds of hoops trying to position the antenna on the outside of their cars and going through little holes here and there... I know every area is different in terms of reception but I did none of that. I used the vent mount to hold the device and ran the antenna under the seat and up the side of the back seat and put the actual antenna box above my two back passenger seats on the little shelf back there under the rear window. The real trick with this is then tucking the wires away as best you can so you don't junk up your car with lose wires. I used one small piece of tape to pin the wire under my seat so as to not kick and pull it when I get in an out of the car. The excess antenna wire (and their is a ton of it) I put underneath one of the back passenger floor mats. Then I tucked the wire running up the side of the one back seat in a groove between the seat and the door. The reception in the area I drive in daily has been fantastic. Not a single complaint. While I can certainly see the advantages of a hard wired system, with a little creativity you can use the antenna without covering the inside of your car with wires.
Overall, this product is great. XM needs to rework the portable idea for the future but otherwise it's wonderful. Fast setup, easy activation, and good sound quality.

Sirius SV2-TK1 InV Satellite Radio with Car Kit Review

Sirius SV2-TK1 InV Satellite Radio with Car Kit
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Both other reviewers didn't rate the product. They rated amazon's service. The product is great for it's price. It's can be hooked up with it's built in fm transmitter or directly with it's headphone jack (which does not include the wire and requires you to have an aux in for your vehicle). Both work well and the sound is crystal clear. The missing features are easy indoor hookup (no compatible boom box) and lack of rewind/fast forward but neither are needed for car only use.

One of Sirius's easiest to use and most affordable receivers, the Sirius InV is amust for satellite radio fans who want a less-expensive entry into the market. Just likeother Sirius-compatible receivers, the InV offers a large, easy-to-read display and anintuitive front control panel. But more significantly for people who spend a lot of time inthe car, the InV is designed to seamlessly complement your driving routine thanks to thebundled car kit. Note that the InV doesn't support Sirius's universal dockingarchitecture--unlike the comparably priced Stratus--so you'll have to connect it to yourstereo console via wires. However, the receiver does offer a complete in-car solution, with a design that's perfect for smaller vehicles with tight mounting locations. Inaddition to the receiver, the kit includes a power adapter that connects to your car's 12- volt cigarette lighter plug, a vehicle antenna for enhanced reception, and a dash mount.Once you're connected, you'll have the ability to decode the incoming digital-qualitysignal from more than 130 music, news, sports, talk, and entertainment channels, many ofthem commercial-free.
An intuitive three-line display tells you the channel name and number, artist name, andsong title. The receiver also lets you program up to 10 presets of your favorite streams, aswell as search by channel name and music category. And with a quick press of the One- Touch Jump button, you can instantly switch between the traffic and weather reportsfor your city or any of the other music, news, or entertainment channels. Otherprogramming details include direct station tuning via the numeric buttons and a channellock option.
The InV also includes a built-in FM transmitter that sends Sirius radio programming toyour vehicle's FM tuner, so you don't have to make a direct connection to enjoy the fullarray of channels. Simply set an empty FM frequency on your radio and tune the InV tothe same frequency (the transmitter supports up to 100 frequencies). The transmitter alsoworks with other FM tuners, such as the one on your home stereo, but is easily pairedwith the car thanks to the vehicle kit, which includes everything you need for listeningto Sirius while driving.
Other features include a real-time clock; a parental lock function that restricts yourchildren's access to off-color material; and compatibility with a separately sold wirelessremote control. The InV, which measures 4.5 by 1.9 by 0.7 inches (W x H x D), is backedby a one-year warranty.

As mentioned in my other satellite radio reviews, I have both Sirius and XM and I like Sirius much more than the XM. I like the music channels on Sirius more and Sirius has much more exclusive programming. The Sportster receiver and boombox is great for satellite radio on the move. Great for bringing it outdoors to a park or the beach, whatever. The only thing that I wish this receiver had is the ability to record. The inability to record and the fact that the Sirius Orbiter boombox that I had sounded a little better when playing crisp sounding highs. Overall a great boombox, just make sure that you buy some 4500mAh nickel-metal hydride rechargeable batteries with it!

I first bought this item with the boombox.(big mistake)receiver was alway very hot to the touch after use.
After a little over a year(one year warrenty)it burnt out.
I replaced the receiver and after a little over another year, the sheild around the connection point for the antenna broke away. It could not see the antenna anymore.I then replaced the received a third time. It only worked for 3.5 hours, then went silent,it would not re-activate after that.
I have now returned it and bought the Stiletto 100 from Sirius. IT IS AWSOME!!!!! I LOVE IT!!!!! Stay away from all X-act products. The service at X-act is even worse then their products.

Enjoy all 120 channels of Sirius satellite radio while driving in your car with XAct's XTR1CK plug-and-play vehicle kit. Equipped with an XTR1 satellite radio receiver, a four-position vehicle docking cradle, a satellite antenna, and a 12-volt cigarette lighter adapter, the kit includes everything you need to enjoy satellite radio while cruising anywhere in the 48 contiguous U.S. states.
The XTR1 conveniently displays all artist, song, and channel information on its six-line readout, which also includes a satellite-updated real-time clock. Meanwhile, selecting channels and menu options is a snap thanks to the large, easy-to-access illuminated buttons. And drivers will delight in such bonuses as the 18 station presets, which let you quickly access your favorite streams, and the S-Seek feature, which lets you know when one of your 10 stored song titles is playing on a given Sirius channel. You can even search the up-to-the-minute Sirius playlists by category, channel, artist, or song title.
The XTR1 sends its signal to your stereo receiver through its built-in wireless FM transmitter, which "broadcasts" the satellite signal over an unused FM frequency--no hardwiring required. As an alternative, you can also connect the XTR1 tuner directly to you stereo's input jack (if it has one) with the included patch cable for the best possible sound quality. And the docking cradle is versatile enough to work on almost any surface in your car, including the sun visor, windshield, or dashboard.

SIRIUS SV3-TK1 Stratus Plug-and-Play Satellite Radio Receiver with Car Kit Review

SIRIUS SV3-TK1 Stratus Plug-and-Play Satellite Radio Receiver with Car Kit
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The kit itself is simple to install and setup took only a few minutes. However, the FM transmitter on the unit is not as good as previous units I've had as it only goes down to 88.1. I live near D.C. and it is almost impossible to find a frequency without something being transmitted on it. My old unit transmitted down to the low 87's and I had no trouble tuning in. It also seems like the transmitter is too week to transmit over even partial signals (a guess a compromise for the small size of it). So I ordered the FM Direct Adapter to see if that helps. It would have been nice if Sirius had included this in their car kit as anybody that lives near a city is likely to need it.

XACT Visor Sirius Satellite Receiver and Remote with CAR and HOME kits - BXTR3CHK Review

XACT Visor Sirius Satellite Receiver and Remote with CAR and HOME kits - BXTR3CHK
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I put a Visor in my car as a replacement for my other Xact receiver, which was moved inside permanently after I got the boombox for it.
It's a cool little unit that has a bright, readable, flippable display and it takes about 4-5 minutes to set it up in your car. I went with the cassette adapter instead of using the built in FM transmitter, due to volume levels as well as the chance for interference from other vehicles. The transmitter worked well when I had it turned on, and gives you the bonus of being able to broadcast the signal to second car (as long as it stays close). It's perfect for road trips, and can be easily hidden or taken along if you're in an area that you don't want it showing. The only reason I took off one star is the display is pretty small, and, even though I can see why they did this, having only one knob to set everything up is a bit of a pain in the [..]. Otherwise, this is a great starter satellite radio if you want to get the feel of what all Sirius has to offer. Dropouts are few and far between, but you can't go crazy with it and park under a bridge for any length of time, but driving under one isn't a problem for me at all.
I absolutely LOVE Sirius and will not go back to terrestrial radio even if you paid me Howard Sterns' money.

Audiovox SIR-PNP3 Sirius Satellite Radio Receiver Review

Audiovox SIR-PNP3 Sirius Satellite Radio Receiver
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I love the SIR-PNP3 so much that I immediately bought a second one. And then a third one, two months later! The PNP3 is the 3rd generation of this Audiovox Sirius "shuttle" receiver, and SIRIUS and Audiovox have hit a grand slam home run with the PNP3. The display on the PNP3 is the brightest and clearest of any SIRIUS (or XM receiver) that I've seen. I haven't listened to AM or FM at all since I started my SIRIUS subscription. I use the Audiovox SIR-PNP3 both in the car and the home. The wireless FM transmitter is of high quality and mighty: You can set up the PNP3 in one room, and simultaneously listen to SIRIUS through any and all of your FM radio receivers located in nearby rooms, (at broadcast distances of upwards of 100 feet in my experience.) And, if you are someone who doesn't yet know much about satellite radio: SIRIUS is better than XM: Absolutely True!

Click Here to see more reviews about: Audiovox SIR-PNP3 Sirius Satellite Radio Receiver

Designed for use in the car, through your home stereo, and even in Audiovox's compatible boombox, the SIR-PNP3 Sirius plug-and-play tuner receives more than 120 streaming satellite radio stations, including stations with commercial-free music, talk, sports, and children's programming. Listeners will need an Audiovox home or car kit to use the tuner, but once equipped, they can transfer the tuner between the house and the car stereo as often as they like, negating the need to buy second and third receivers. The tuner is remarkably easy to use, with a large 2.5-by-1.38-inch amber backlit LCD screen that displays the artist info, song title, category, and time, along with a 0-9 number pad and a wireless remote that allow for direct channel access. Users can manually adjust the contrast and dimming level for better viewing, or they can set the display to Auto Dimmer so that it instinctively adjusts to the ambient light level. The receiver also includes a built-in FM transmitter that broadcasts satellite tunes through any FM radio--a bonus for people whose car stereos don't come with auxiliary inputs. Otherwise, most users will choose to connect the tuner (via one of the Audiovox kits) to a stereo's RCA jacks or 3.5 mm auxiliary input for better audio performance.
The SIR-PNP3 is equipped with a number of convenient user options. Most listeners will appreciate the 30 presets in three separate banks (A, B, and C), along with the preset scan function, which browses among the preset channels rather than perusing the entire station catalog. In addition, the receiver includes a preset list mode that displays the preset channels either one at a time or six at a time, with listings by channel name, artist, or song title. To save time, listeners can also directly access Sirius channels by their three-digit channel numbers rather than paging through the channel directory. Additional features include a Look Ahead function, which checks the current playlist of other channels without leaving your current station; an S-seek function that searches the Sirius signal for songs or artists that match your pre-determined favorites; and several time-based options, including an alarm clock, a sleep mode, and a program alert that automatically activates the radio and turns it to a specific program at a preset time.
The tuner measures 4.5 by 3 by 1.5 inches (W x H x D) and carries a one-year warranty on parts and labor. Listeners will need to purchase a compatible car kit, home kit, or boombox along with a subscription to Sirius to enjoy satellite radio programming through the tuner.

Xact XTR1 Sirius Satellite Plug and Play Receiver Review

Xact XTR1 Sirius Satellite Plug and Play Receiver
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First off, the XACT is a very nice receiver. I have owned a PNP2 and this receiver and I prefer this one. The XACT, while not wearable, is very portable. You can even buy the Powerpod and take it anywhere you go. The size of the receiver does come with setbacks though, there are only 10 S-Seeks compared to 20 on most of the other receivers. The screen is smaller (although very nice), and the presets require a little more work to set. The greatest thing though is the service itself. It is great not to hear any commercials, and the music streams are top quality. The Talk, News, and Sports are also great. Sirius recently added a Maxim channel, which is quickly becomming one of my favorites. Sirius's sports are great, I am a fan of football and there is nothing like hearing your team that is normally not carried locally. In the end I recommend this receiver and Sirius.

I bought this after signing up for Amazon Prime. Received it in two days at no extra charge. Hooked it up to my Onkyo receiver and ran the antenna cable outside...I had to drill a hole through the wall to get the cable outside, behind my components. I put two screws onto the outside edge of the overhang of the roof and mounted the antenna. Came inside, hooked up all the wires to the dock and plugged in my Sportster 4.
I got the full 3 bars of signal strength and am enjoying my Sirius Satelite Radio as I'm typing this review. I am trully happy with this purchase and it's about $10 cheaper than Circuit City or Best Buy.
So long as you mount the antenna as the directions state, I don't think anyone should have a problem with the reception. The instructions included show what direction the antenna should be pointing depending on what part of the country you live...also...the optimum position for the antenna is pointing straight up.

The Sirius SUP-H1 universal plug 'n' play home kit comes with everything youneed to play your Sportster 3, Sportster 4, Starmate 3, Starmate 4, and Stratus satelliteradio receiver through your home stereo speakers. The kit is designed around a handymounting cradle, which holds your receiver in a single easy-to-access location. Just slideyour Sirius receiver into the cradle and rest it on a tabletop, desk, bookshelf, orentertainment center. Once the receiver is mounted, users have two listening options:they can rely on the receiver's built-in FM transmitter, or they can run the included RCAaudio cable between the cradle's audio output and the stereo. The latter option deliversa better overall sound, but is slightly more cumbersome. The bundled antenna, meanwhile, is fully weatherproof, so you can install it indoors or outdoors depending onwhere the satellite signal is strongest. Finally, the kit comes with an AC adapter thatpowers your Sirius receiver and a spacer for the docking station (required for the non- Sportster models). In sum, the kit delivers access to more than 130 streams of originalSirius programming beamed coast to coast, including 65 streams of commercial-free,digital-quality music, along with multiple news, talk, sports, entertainment, and children'sstations. XTR8 Sirius Satellite Radio Receiver and Car Kit Review

I have had this product since December 22, 2005. My use typically involves keeping it in my car, and then moving it into my office, and so on. In about March of this year, the radio began to intermittently shut off when I hit bumps or stopped suddenly. I would have to jiggle the power cord (which fits into jack on the side of the radio) in order to make it work. This power outage began to occur more and more often, and then began to become problematic even while the radio was just sitting on the shelf in my office. Calls to Sirius and then to Xact proved frustrating. Xact had unreasonable demands in order to provide warranty service, and didn't offer much help. They were reluctant and, in fact refused to give me the address of the main office of Xact, as I had wished to inform Xact's president of their shoddy service. In any event, as of yesterday, the radio died completely...no power cord jiggling miracle! I can either buy a new radio or send it to them and wait for them to take their time to return it. I am choosing to buy another radio.
While this radio functioned quite nicely at first, it is not reliable, as you can tell from this and the other reviews...terrible customer service from the company exacorbates the situation. Stay away from Xact...

SIRIUS ST4-TK1 Starmate 4 Plug-and-Play Satellite Radio Receiver with Car Kit Review

SIRIUS ST4-TK1 Starmate 4 Plug-and-Play Satellite Radio Receiver with Car Kit

Overall, the Starmate 4 is OK, but it has some significant design flaws that some thoughtful engineering could have easily fixed. I wish I had bought the Sportster 4. First, unlike the Sportster 4, this model does NOT incorporate the Auxillary Input feature for plugging in your MP3 player or other audio devices. Many of the online merchants advertise this, but it is not present on the Starmate 4 car dock. The addition of the Starmate 4 dock increases the size of the Starmate, which is thinner than previous models, but is now functionally larger in size because of the addition of the dock. A major design flaw (in my opinion) is that the antenna, power and auxillary output from the car dock are located on the back of the unit, rather than the bottom or sides. So, although the unit is physically thinner than previous models, by the time you install it, it is functionally thicker than previous models. In short, the footprint of the new Starmate is larger than previous models when you factor in the docking cradle and the location of the antenna, power, and audio connections. Since I bought this unit for a smaller footprint than the Sportster 4, I am dissappointed. I had hoped to install it flush with my dashboard by attaching velcro to the back of the unit similar to the way you could with the Starmate Replay.
The positive is that it DOES have a docking cradle which makes it much easier to move from the car to the home. If you don't need to move the unit around, then the Starmate 4 does not have any functionality that doesn't exist in the Starmate Replay. The addition on an auxillary input jack similar to the Sportster 4 would have offered a significant upgrade. If the designers for the next generation of radios are listening, I'd suggest spending time thinking about how people actually have to install these devices. Place the connectors on the bottom or sides of the docking cradle or provide a method of giving the user options. My 2006 Prius does not have any smooth surfaces for using the suction cup except for the windshield which slopes too much to allow convenient installation. Likewise the air conditioning vents don't work well in my vehicle for installation. Frankly, I'm sorry I spent the extra money for this unit. But, if you want a unit that can be moved easily from car to home, this is a good option. For flexibility, the Sportster 4 might be a better option since it does supply additional functionality for the same price.
Update: I've had this for 9-months now and it has worked flawlessly. However, I stand by my human factors design concerns stated in the initial review and think that a dock design could be created to give the user options for where the wires plug into the dock. We all jury-rig these radios into our cars, regardless of our personal preferences. The design of the radio, combined with the configuration of my car (Prius), required that I purchase an aftermarket windshield mount since the one that came with the radio would not work in my car.
