RCA RCU1010 Universal 9 Device Touch Screen Remote Control Review

RCA RCU1010 Universal 9 Device Touch Screen Remote Control
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I don't understand everyone else's negative reviews about the learning feature of this remote. For most of my components it took a little extra time and patience, but it got there eventually. The most trouble I had was with my Apex DVD player; the remote preset code wouldn't work and I had to program each button individually. The functions were "forgotten" a few times, but I patiently kept reprogramming and now it finally seems to have stuck. Sure, if I had paid a ridiculous amount for it, this would be unacceptable, but you ALWAYS get what you pay for. I've learned that lesson time and time again.
When I tried programming a second DVD player onto Aux, it screwed up the main player's settings. I haven't tried it again since successfully getting the first to stay in there. There are 4 Audio buttons which unfortunately only offer soft keys suited for audio operation, not adaptable to DVD players. So for now I'm holding onto my lesser-used player's remote.
The pros:
Programming wasn't difficult, I don't think I even bothered reading the manual.
I like that the permanent hard keys are play, FF, rewind, as I need those for 3 of the 5 components I am operating. The prior touchscreen remote I tried (Sima) had those as soft keys, which was annoying.
The response time for the keys seems adequate.
The blue-lit screen looks very high-tech and buttons aren't too hypersensitive about hitting the wrong one.
I love the punch-through feature for the volume keys. On the Sima I had to constantly switch back to TV to change volume.
The touchscreen material makes it very easy to wipe fingerprints off. Keeps it looking newer longer.
I love the PDA look of the unit.
I love FINALLY having only one remote on the coffee table, rather than two or three.
The cons:
The biggest con I can see is the placement of the hard keys. Being at the bottom, it is impossible to use this with only one hand. Would have been better to reverse hard keys and touchscreen (or provided longer hand grip underneath hard keys).
Not able to relabel soft keys for special functions. But from what I have read, only the top-of-the-line models let you do this. Again, you get what you pay for.
Kind of silly to have a "mute" button so prominently placed in the center of the hard keys. Our family never uses it. I wish it could have been reprogrammed for an important Tivo function instead.
Backlight doesn't stay on long enough, and impossible to see screen in the dark without it. Time will tell what kind of wear this puts on the batteries.
Overall I'd say this is a great value for the price. Some people who are more demanding with higher expectations might want to look at higher end units, though.
****EDIT****: 9 months later the remote has forgotten all my codes repeatedly and now nothing will stick. It's back to operating only the TV. Guess you have to pay top dollar to have a remote that is really and truly universal. Subtract 3 of those stars.

Average Reviews:

I have a Gmini 400 (Which is a great product by itself) I decided to purchase this as a little add on and...
it is great! easy controls once you get used to it. I enjoy being able to leave my player in my pocket and still scroll through all of my music files.
The radio is a little sensitive since your headphone cord is the antena but still a cool add on (you can record off the radio with a simple click)
I love this product and recomend Archos products!

Chamberlain 956CB Mini Multi-Function 3-Button Remote Control Review

Chamberlain 956CB Mini Multi-Function 3-Button Remote Control
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Here's a very important piece of information that's missing in Amazon's description:
The Liftmaster 970LM is compatible only with garage door openers with an orange learn button and SECURITY+ logo. If you have purple learn button, then buy the Liftmaster 370LM instead, which operates at 315Mhz instead of 390Mhz.
Mine works great. Comes with instruction, battery and velcro. Programming is easy, just press the orange learn button, release it quickly, then press the center button on the remote, release it quickly, see confirmation light flashes or hear click click sound near the learn button. That's it. (Don't hold the learn button for more than 6 seconds, as it will clear all codes and make your other remotes useless.)
I have a detached garage. It used to be a hassle to carry the remote with me everywhere I go. Now I can just add this to my keychain and never have to think about it anymore. I didn't want to put the original remote (visor clip on type) inside my pocket, because it's large and a little pressure can push the button down accidentally which might close/open the garage door at unexpected time, causing injuries for my little baby running around. Now I have one hand free for holding my baby's hand or carring groceries.

Honeywell Wireless Outdoor Solar Speaker (White) Review

Honeywell Wireless Outdoor Solar Speaker (White)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Wireless outdoor speakers are a hot commodity these days, but this "green" solar powered Honeywell speaker is nothing short of a dream machine for your party needs. You'll no longer have to deal with hanging your speakers out of windows or trying to use multiple extension cords to provide music for your party. Add weather resistance to the mix and you have a perfect speaker.
Perhaps one of the most advantageous features of this speaker is the ability to adjust it via remote control without budging from your chair. The best feature by far is that this outdoor speaker contains solar cells that will recharge the unit. You can also charge the speaker with the AC/DC adaptor.
Included in this box is the solar speaker, a remote control, docking station, solar speaker AC adaptor, an auxiliary cable, an audio cable, docking station AC adaptor, and four docking station adaptors (10GB/20GB, TOUCH 8, 16, 32GB, NANO, 30GB/60GB, and a mini). This speaker has a fantastic retro look that reminded many who looked at it of the robot in the Lost in Space series. Danger, danger Will Robinson . . . you're going to fall in love with this speaker! Just check out the video and see what you think ...

Archos FM Remote for Archos 5 and 7 Internet Media Tablets (Black) Review

Archos FM Remote for Archos 5 and 7 Internet Media Tablets (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Note: When I first purchased this accessory, it did not work until later when I updated my firmware. Only then did it become functional.
In one sense, this is a slick and versatile little accessory for your Archos IMT. It does allow you limited control over your MP3's and also the ability to listen to the radio as well as record voice memos. This is an imaginitive and inexpensive add-on to add to your collection.
However, now I can't remember why I bought this: I rarely listen to the radio, and if I wanted to do that I could buy one for ten bucks or so instead of using the biggest and best media player available. If I wanted a voice recorder, there are far smaller such gadgets available. I guess it's just cool that the FM Remote can do these things, and isn't the primary reason you buy an IMT. It simply increases its versatility, which is already great.
Two things to keep in mind:
1) When the FM Remote is plugged in, the IMT's built-in speakers disengage, so you will have to use headphones or MP3 speakers. Fortunately, the FM remote also has a headphone jack at the top.
2) The FM Remote cable is only slightly longer than the length of an average adult arm, which means that anything you could use the remote to do, you could also just reach over and interface directly with the Archos anyways. Ergo, the Remote isn't really that remote.
All in all, it is ok.

Logitech Harmony RF Wireless Extender Review

Logitech Harmony RF Wireless Extender
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Logitech Harmony RF Wireless Extender allows your RF-equipped Harmony Remote (the 890, 895 or new 1000) to control components without having an IR "line of sight" to the components. One RF Wireless Extender is included with the Harmony 890, but it is unfortunately not included with the Harmony 1000.
Make no mistake, this device is an absolute REQUIREMENT for any large room or complex setup. In my configuration, the Harmony 1000 didn't have the strength to power all of my components through IR from 20 feet distance. The RF extender solved this problem, and now I can control my entire setup even from another room.
One RF Wireless Extender can control up to 8 components within the line of sight of the unit, or within line of sight of the 8 included IR emitters. You can add multiple extenders to your configuration if you have components in different rooms or areas that could not be served by one unit. Annoyingly, even if you have more than 8 components within the reach of the unit or the emitters the Harmony software won't let you assign more than 8 devices to a single extender.
IMPORTANT: You should try to setup and verify your Harmony configuration using IR-only if possible before adding the extender, even if you have to sit near your components or have cabinet doors open. This is because the Harmony software makes you connect and disconnect both the extender (which must be unplugged from AC power) and the remote each time you make a change. Setting up the Harmony first, by itself, with IR is much easier to make changes to the configuration.
After verifying I could control my components using IR-only, I added the RF Wireless Extender to my setup. The Harmony software updated to the latest firmware, and I have had no problems configuring it using both Mac OS X and Windows clients.
Setup is very easy. If all of your components are behind a cabinet, you can simply mount this "blaster" unit inside, at least 10 inches from the front of your components. Or, you can attach the 8 included wired emitters (in 4 pairs of 2) near the IR receivers of each component. The wires for each of the 4 pairs are roughly 7 feet long, splitting into 2 emitters that must be placed within 25 inches of each other. Also good to note is that the tape is strong enough to attach to your component, but not strong enough to leave any residue should you need to remove them.
Within the Harmony setup, you then assign each component to either IR or RF Extender control. Optionally, you can assign each component to a channel (A,B,C,D,blaster) which corresponds to the 4 sets of 2 wired emitters and base, or all channels which sends all commands to all emitters. I chose to specifically assign each component to its channel, which seems to give better performance. (TIP: label your emitter wires!)
Once configured, you connect the RF Extender and the Harmony Remote to your computer to download the configuration. Then, you must plug the RF Extender into the wall, and optionally attach the IR emitter wires. The Harmony remote must initially be "paired" with the RF Extender, which is done by pressing the "Connect" button on the extender, and following the prompts on your remote.
Operation was flawless. I could control all components from around my house! And, the performance of startup was much faster, I believe because I had assigned each component to a specific channel on the extender.
In my configuration, I was pleasantly surprised to find the RF extender is fast enough to send the repeated command sequences needed to accelerate up and down through the menus in my AppleTV. Great job, Logitech!
If there was one area where Logitech could make improvements it would be the supplied documentation, which attempts to be user friendly but in the process is so oversimplified it is of little use. Since Amazon doesn't allow half-star increments, I stand by my 5-star review, documentation withstanding.
Based on the large number of problems people had when this was first released a year ago, I was expecting issues, but it would appear that the latest firmware (RF Extender v2.4, Harmony 890 v4.7) and Harmony client software (v7.0.2) have resolved all issues for both Mac OS X and Windows users.
All in all, a highly recommended product - and a great value bundled with the matching Harmony 890 (see my review there). I have since upgraded to the Harmony 1000, but kept this extender to use with it. It's a shame that Logitech doesn't include the extender with the 1000, as it really is a requirement.
I would recommend this without hesitation.

Avital 4103LX Remote Start System with Two 4-Button Remote Review

Avital 4103LX Remote Start System with Two 4-Button Remote
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
More of this review is about the installation experience than the unit itself. If someone else will be doing the installation you may want to skip to the "Actual Product Review" section.
The Avital 4103LX is a remote starter manufactured by Directed Electronics, who also manufacture the Clifford, Python and Viper brands (among others). The 4103LX (which replaced the older 4103L) comes with two one-way remotes and has no alarm features. Since my wife's 2004 Sable station wagon is not exactly high on the "vulnerability to theft" chart, the factory alarm offers more than adequate protection. Two-way remotes (which show on the remote when the car is running) are fancier but they reportedly chew through batteries quickly. Therefore I decided that a one-way system like the 4103LX would best suit our needs.
For years most cars have had additional security devices built into their keys. This is why keys now cost $30-$300 rather than 45 cents. Installing a remote starter in these vehicles requires the purchase of a transponder override module which can cost an additional $25 to $80. These are usually specific to the make of vehicle. For the Mercury I used a model PKFM from XPressKit (yet another Directed Electronics company). Be aware that you may need both factory keys to program the bypass to your vehicle. Some models actually require you to leave one key permanently in the unit (tough if two people drive the car) but others (like the PKFM) only need your keys for the initial programming.
Because of the complexity of installing these products the installation instructions are aimed at professional installers. Although I've not installed a remote start system before, I owned a car audio installation center until 1988 so I'm not unfamiliar with car electronics. Even so, I found the 4103s instructions to be vague, incomplete and occasionally inaccurate. Additionally, the bulk of the company's on-line technical support is only available to registered dealers. Fortunately, wiring diagrams and installation tips for most makes/models are available from other sources on the net. Clubs and forums for your vehicle's make/model are a good place to start if you're thinking about installing this yourself.
My advice to a non-professional who wants to tackle the installation of this (or any) remote starter:
1) Obtain a document (usually available on-line) describing the location and color of all the wires pertinent to the installation of a remote starter in your make, model and year of vehicle.
2) Read the on-line installation manual (available on Avital's site) to determine if you're up to the task. Note: Steps 1 & 2 should be done BEFORE ordering anything.
3) Be sure you have everything you need in the way of tools, supplies and accessories (transponder bypass module, etc) before install-day.
4) Allow the entire day for the installation.
5) Be methodical. Double-check each connection.
Actual Product Review:
Although it took all day to install, everything went fine and the unit performs as expected. The four-button remote can be used to replace the factory remote on most vehicles (if desired). The range on the remote seems excellent. I walked several hundred feet down my street to where I could no longer see the car - pushed the start button - and when I returned the car was running. I haven't had the unit long enough to comment on reliability but all the DE brands seem to get good reviews from the pros.
I've already mentioned the problems with the installation manual. The biggest one for me surfaced post installation when I wanted to change a few of the default responses. My primary concern was that the default configuration started the car with just one press of the button. I wanted to change it to two presses to eliminate starting the vehicle by accident. According to the manual this can be accomplished by placing the unit in programming mode and pressing a sequence of buttons. Unfortunately the manual left out the part of the sequence where you select between menus 1 and 2. I had to go to an on-line forum to discover the proper way to program the unit, which was then easily configured to my liking.
I've deducted one star for the poor installation instructions and lack of non-dealer support. Other than that I have no complaints with the unit.

Griffin Technology Auxiliary Audio Cable with Inline Remote Control Review

Griffin Technology Auxiliary Audio Cable with Inline Remote Control
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I had bought this remote to use it to control my iPhone.
I need both to control the iPod and the iPhone (using double clicks, triple clicks, hold etc...).
This remote is of pretty good quality and very light. It feels a bit cheap on the button side, but the large buttons make it useable even with gloves.
The big minuses though are that there is no volume control, just play/pause, next and previous.
It's a total deal breaker for me.
And secondly, it is not compatible with double/triple clicks and hold. So you can't shuffle or fast forward in tracks and you can't trigger voice command. Another deal breaker for an iPhone.

Quick and easy to program. No switches to flip, just press the purple button on the back of your opener and press the desired button on the remote. I like the three button style. I have a three car garage with two doors. The large button opens the two-door; the lined, smaller button opens the single door. The third button I use to control the light in the single stall. Extremely convenient and easy to use. If you can't do it, I would say you probably have the wrong unit for your opener (check the color of the button on your opener, it should be purple for this remote to work).

Progamming up is very easy , buttons are laid out very well. This "is" the last remote you'll ever need. I have another previous model and could not be happier. The light is a good idea when your watching your favorite shows at night , but this model has a "red" light back ground illumination which is very hard to see. The other model had a normal "greenish white" back ground which worked well. I'm not sure why they chnaged it , they should go back to it.I would have rated it 5 stars otherwise due to hard to see lighting..
