While I like the idea, this is far from a great implementation. The unit arrived with a defective display so that it was nearly impossible to tell the frequency it was tuned. After messing with it for a while, it was possible to get the display by squeezing the external casing at certain spots (not a permanent fix).
It took even longer to try to find an relatively clear frequency on the radio (in Los Angeles). Regardless, there's always interference and occasional noise.
I live in an apartment that's pretty much shielded (not by intent) from radio frequencies, so I performed an experiment on my home stereo system. The Gruv X muddies the sound a bit, and over-emphasizes the bass.
Unless you don't care about the sound quality, this device is probably not for you.
Pros:
- Small
- Tunable for all FM frequencies in .1 MHz increments.
- Play audio on your radio without modifications.
Cons:
- Poor broadcast capabilities (easily overpowered by interference from nearby stations)
- Requires a single AAA battery (no other ways to power it)
- Poor build quality
- Odd controls (play and stop button used for increment and decrement (and also power on/off).
- Poor sound quality (muddied sound and over-emphasized bass)
