(More customer reviews)With the DC 30 Garmin has fixed the bugs in their original astro collar. You had two choices on the astro - either screw a plate behind the transmitter and sandwich your dog's normal collar or else use this big velcro harness to wrap around your dog. Velcro + dog hair = useless fast.
Garmin fixed the problems - they put a metal plate behiind the transmitter and a separate gps antenna inside the collar up top pointing at the satellites. This is because the dog collar w/ gps naturally hung down due to the gps weight causing the old astro gps to point the antenna at the ground - it worked, just not as good.
THIS ITEM IS NOT A REPLACEMENT FOR YOUR ORIGINAL TRANSMITTER. The DC-30 is a fully functioning replacement, but this item is an accessory for the DC-30, mainly a replacement dog collar with mounting points for a gps antenna and a gps transmitter and an integrated vhf whip antenna. It is missing the GPS unit itself. That unit (including a collar) sells for $160-$200 and is complete with chargers, etc.
This is just a collar. In fact, it doesnt even have a d-ring for you to put a leash on it. It is only meant to hold the garmin gps. You would buy this if your dog turned your old collar (dc-30) into a chew-toy and destroyed it or broke the antenna running through the field.
It's nice of garmin to make an accessory like this so you don't have to fork out another $160 for a dc-30 because your dog likes to chew on things or gets excited in the field. If you are looking to upgrade to the DC-30 this is not what you want - check for the $160-$199 price package. It gets confusing but this is not a great deal on a dc-30
