(More customer reviews)I'm an audiophile and all around gear head. I have owned Grado SR325s, Bose IEMs, high end Sonys, and top of the line Sure e4s . I currently own a pair of Grado SR60s and still have the Sures.
I've been listening to the W1 paired with the SA-1 earbuds for several days now. They are hands down the best sounding earbuds I have ever owned, easily beating my Grado SR 60s in back to back tests. The Sures don't even come close - too bright, lacking midrange and bass. The Grado SR60s sound good, but flat compared to these. they are also uncomfortable and have an enormous, thick cord that snags on everything. The Bose "on ear" buds were my previous favorite, but the sound was very colored - heavy bass, anemic highs, just ok midrange. They died when the cord failed.
Then there are the CRAP Motorolla bluetooth wireless headphones I bought last year. They are barely tolerable as hands free headsets for my IPhone, absolute GARBAGE for music. Stick your speakers in the toilet, and crank up the volume. The sound will closely approximate Bluetooth audio.
The SA-1s sound great - only bested, slightly, if at all by the stellar Grado SR325s to my ears. I tried the black bass ports, and they add some punch, but kill the highs - at least to my 46 yr old ears, so I went back to the silver tips. The mid size double tips are very comfortable for my ears, putting the torturous Sure tips to shame.
The BONUS?
I ordered the W1 wireless kit because I'm active, and like to move around. I live on a sailboat, and sailing requires constant physical activity, as does working on the boat. Previously, I'd fire up my Bose sound dock and blast it while sailing or working, but the fidelity is just so-so (Typical Bose) and I longed for a better solution. Wired headphones just don't cut it on a boat. Turning your head quickly or changing layers becomes a major pain. Same when the cord fouls as you are trying to douse the jib in a gale!
The W1 sounds crystal clear, and range is acceptable - about 30 feet inside. Outside, depending on your RF environment, they are subject to cutting out. To remedy this, keep the transmitter and receiver close to one another. Moving my IPhone from my hip to my neck (hung like sunglasses from my shirt collar) totally fixes the problem. An arm band holder would accomplish the same thing.
The instructions are clear the the range is INSIDE range. The transmitter is TINY, and lasts for an entire day - to increase range they'd have to increase power, making it either die sooner or bulky. There is no free lunch.
The freedom of wireless is awesome, and so is the clarity. The SA1s are beautiful, cheaper than the Bose, look better, and the cord or even transmitter can be replaced.
5 stars for value, comfort, sound quality, and convenience.
