Atlantic Technology WA-50-SYS Wireless Audio Transmitter and Receiver System (Black) Review
Average Reviews:
(More customer reviews)This is a really cool piece of tech. It's essentially a wireless bridge for 3.5mm stereo cables. I tested it out by plugging my ipod into the transmitter and then plugging a set of powered speakers into the other end. The audio quality was excellent and the distance I was able to cover was easily over 30 feet. I noticed no interference even in my house that is loaded with other wireless signals (WiFi router, baby monitor, Bluetooth cell phones, etc). I did notice that the baby monitor picked up a lot more interference though.
This product is USB-powered, which makes it great for setting up your computer speakers. You can choose to plug it into an existing USB port or use one of the included adapters to plug into a standard wall socket (some new wall sockets have USB built in too). Audio can then stream from your computer to wherever system you want.
The device takes 3.5mm stereo jacks. The other end of the cable can be whatever will work in your system. The product only comes with 3 types of cables though (and 2 of each): stereo-to-stereo, stereo-to-red and white RCA and stereo-to-yellow RCA mono channel (for subwoofers, not video. I tried).
The product description talks about using the product for subwoofers, but in my experience I never had a problem running wire to my subwoofers. It's always the satellite rear channel speakers that have caused me trouble when running cable. And for that, this product is excellent at creating a wireless rear channel if your system doesn't already accommodate that. However, you may need to do some cable modification or find a different adapter depending on how the satellite speakers hook up in your system.
This product has a number of interesting applications. I find it works really well, but it is definitely cost-prohibitive. As a reference, I have a Sony 5 disc DVD changer receiver with 5.1 surround and a rear channel that uses IR for wireless and it was around $600 5 years ago. At $200 for this great device, it's definitely appealing to high-end systems.
